How to Eliminate Holiday Stress? “More Safe Indulgence” Says Expert

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 13, 2004

Weight gain, stress, and over spending are three reasons why many find the holidays less than jolly.

“There are new ways to skate through the season without gaining a pound, falling prey to tension or plunging into the annual splurge/guilt syndrome,” says Sharon Allbright, author of best seller, “Low-Carb Sweets and the Art of Self Indulgence.”

She offers innovative ideas to solve these dilemmas (ranging from parties to presents) and promises not a bit of deprivation or New Year blues.

For safe indulgence, “Plan ahead” is the first tip Allbright suggests to the millions of Americans who reportedly gain at least a pound during the season of “feastivities.”

“This is the ‘sugar plump season,’ so it’s essential to learn ways to indulge a sweet tooth while still sticking to a satisfying and healthy eating plan. To keep the “ho ho” in my holidays, I keep a pre-season cache of my easy home-made goodies in the freezer as a guarantee for safe splurging,” says Allbright.

One fast favorite in “Low-carb Sweets” is the five minute Macadamia Fudge (see recipe at end.) This scrumptious candy doesn’t require cooking and can be an easy ally for warding off a “chocoholic” attack. These goodies are not only sugar-free but loaded with protein and contain only one carb per piece. For holiday flair, she suggests using gold foiled candy cups and finds the candy makes a luxurious last minute gift. (They keep in the freezer for weeks.)

Holiday Wrap

To ward off temptation at parties, she suggest wrapping some of this fabulous fudge in plastic and slip it into an evening bag for that gala that promises plenty of “fa la la” along with your favorite double chocolate fudge cake.

“When everyone is standing around the dessert table munching irresistible pastries with their champagne or coffee, I secretly pull out my stash of luscious little indulgences.

“One problem can arise when others notice and ask where I found that treat. I either fib and say I took the last one…or sometimes I share a few of my chocolate treasures,” she confesses.

Family Gatherings

The “queen of low carbs” feels that family gatherings are one of the harder events because old patterns can become so entrenched. It is especially difficult when visiting the infamous mom, grandmother or anyone else whose slogan is “Eat-Eat-Eat.”

The author finds that in most instances, this host is the very one who inadvertently helped create one’s girth in the first place.

“It seems that no matter how carefully I explain my low-carb diet, that person just doesn’t get it.” So once again, be prepared for the onslaught of unwanted eating demands.

“I have learned to never eat anything just to make someone else happy,” confides the author.

House Party Plan

Allbright takes a different tactic when attending a house party and suggests that safe indulgences can be a breeze if you volunteer to bring a dessert or just surprise your hostess with

a healthy, sugar-free dessert.

“This will not only make you a hero with your host but will also guarantee a healthy finale to any meal. My recipe for “Chocolate Crème Brulee” is a show stopper. This plan will make you popular with other guests, too– especially when you reveal it’s sugar-free,” says Allbright

Tipple with Taste

The former health columnist suggest enjoying spirits that don’t take one down the path to bulging thighs. Drinks that create a feeling of festivity include dry champagne and an after dinner favorite is coffee laced with brandy and a dollop of whipped cream. She says it’s a pleasant picker-upper with a rosy after glow.

Vegetables in Splendor

Veggies can be the star of any occasion when prepared Allbright’s way. “One of my favorites is artichokes with a smoked salmon dip. These green globes look like “arduous preparation” but are actually easy. if you don’t bother to cut off the spiny tips. The ends soften once they are steamed.

“Instead of candied yams, I make mashed banana squash with a big taste boost from grated orange peel, cinnamon, healthy sweetener and butter.

White asparagus are available during the holidays and make a big splash with a colorful pesto dip.

Cranberries don’t have to be jellied and sugar laden. A raw cranberry relish takes minutes in the food processor with some lemon zest and healthy sweetener,” she says.

Shop at Home

To relieve the stress of shopping, the Internet provides 24 hour browsing without tired toes, parking hassles or long checkout lines.

If you crave a little holiday atmosphere, put on your favorite Christmas CD, light a cinnamon candle and snuggle in your favorite pajamas as you peruse with a pre-set budget for each gift. Most places will even ship, avoiding long lines at the post office.

I have practically completed my Chanukah/Christmas gift buying at http://www.Amazon.Com because just about everyone is happy with books, music, and my husband’s favorite, computer software.

Chino Hills Fitness Expert Provides Holiday Health Tips

Chino Hills, CA (PRWEB) December 28, 2011

The average body takes a substantial hit during the holiday season. People are working out less, eating more and suffering escalated levels of stress. They have less time to sit down and eat healthy meals and they are consuming more alcohol, to boot. The holidays can still be fun without the excess, says Chino Hills Fitness Expert Sam Bakhtiar of the Fit Concepts franchise, and we can still get everything done without neglecting our health.

Dr. Sam Bakhtiar offers the following Chino Hills fitness tips for the holidays:

Don?t hide from your scale. Get it out and weigh yourself each week to see if your food intake needs a serious adjustment. Often times, people don?t realize how much they?re overeating until the scale tells them so.

Keep a food journal. You?re more likely to be accountable for what you?re consuming this way.

Squeeze in morning workouts, first thing. You can?t make excuses about being too busy if it?s over and done with. If you only have 30 minutes, make it count by interval training ? a few minutes of rigorous intensity, followed by a recovery period. Studies show this approach burns the most calories and offers the most health benefits.

Schedule time to relax, whether it?s 30 minutes of mindful yoga, a hot soak in the bathtub, or an hour of reading before bed, keeping your cortisol levels down will prevent unnecessary weight gain and maintain your sanity during this stressful time.

Enjoy family-oriented outdoor activities. Head to the mountains to do some skiing, sledding, ice skating or snow-shoeing. Make it a ritual to take family after-dinner walks to stay active and promote fitness in your household. Get out and enjoy a bike ride or jog through a scenic park.

Sign up for a January fitness boot camp and weight loss program to start the year off right.

?Our Chino Hills fitness programs are in such high demand because people are walking out of here 30 to 100 pounds lighter. They feel empowered, stronger, leaner, healthier and more energized,? Sam explains. ?That?s why you keep hearing so much about this ?fitness boot camp? trend and how ?addicting? it is. Who doesn?t want to feel mentally and physically incredible? Boot camps pack a powerful punch in just an hour of time and your fat burning machine is revved up even after you leave the gym.?

?December is a bit like the calm before the storm at any local fitness club,? Sam Bakhtiar explains. ?Then, like clockwork, come January, it?s a zoo of people who want to sign up for a weight loss boot camp and get back on track with their fitness.? Unfortunately, he says, there are only so many spots available, so the smartest people should sign up in December to ensure their position in one of the Chino Hills classes. Right now, the Fit Concepts Chino Hills Fitness center is offering a special holiday promotion of $ 100 off any program for people who text ?FITCONCEPTS? to 77453 by December 30th.

Fitness Pros Should Drop The Drill Sergeant Routine, Says Precision Nutrition Expert

Toronto, Ontario and New York, NY (PRWEB) November 01, 2011

Precision Nutrition, a leading fitness and nutrition research company, today publishes some surprising findings in an e-book for fitness professionals about what works best: becoming mindfulness therapists.

?Sure, you may own a whistle, a clipboard, and a booming voice, but that doesn?t mean you need to be Drill Sergeant Hardass with every client,” says Dr. John M. Berardi, Chief Science Officer at Precision Nutrition, of the research published today in a free, downloadable e-book.

Berardi began his career as a personal trainer, then went on to earn a PhD in exercise physiology and nutrient biochemistry before founding Precision Nutrition. He has conducted the largest body transformation study in history, based on over 10 years of research and statistical data from over 6,000 clients. Today Precision Nutrition offers a comprehensive nutrition coaching course designed specifically to teach professionals working in a personal training or strength coaching environment how to get clients in the best shape of their lives.

Berardi?s thinking has evolved considerably over the years. These days he?s most interested in improving fitness professionals? ability to help their clients lead better lives.

Berardi writes:

Forget ?willpower? and ?motivation?. Help clients change their environment and their life systems. And broaden their social support.

Willpower is a very limited and unreliable bank account. Never count on it. Ever.

Instead, help clients build an environment, a system, and a support network that get them to their goals.

If junk food is in their house, they?ll eat it. So help them clean out their cupboards.

If their gym is horribly inconvenient, they won?t go. So make it convenient, or give them a simple workout they can do at home. And suggest they meet a friend to work out.

If they wait till they feel full of energy to work out, they?ll never do it. So schedule sessions like an appointment, and help them book non-trainer days in their calendar with you.

If they?re surrounded by people who don?t support their goals, they?ll have a tougher uphill journey than a spawning salmon. So help them take a class or join a group. Introduce them to other fit folks in the gym, and build a strong social support network of fit and healthy people.

If clients don?t get rewards and recognition, they won?t keep going. So point out all their ?bright spots? ? the qualities and accomplishments that they already have, and that they?ve built to date.

Whether you like it or not, you?re a ?mindfulness therapist?.

If the client is struggling to change bad habits, start by helping them to become aware of what they?re doing, thinking, and feeling (both physically and emotionally). We call this noticing and naming.

Clients can?t change something if they?re clueless. So help them tune in.

Around here, we call that awesomeness-based coaching (ABC): we find the awesomeness in everyone, and simply make it bigger.

There?s much more about how how finding the awesomeness in everyone can lead to big progress ? and changed lives ? in the free e-book downloadable from Precision Nutrition?s Facebook page.

Fad Diet or Not: Celiac Expert Dispels Common Myths about Gluten-Free Diet

Toronto, Ontario (PRWEB) May 13, 2009

It’s amazing what celebrity power can do to raise awareness about one of the most under-diagnosed common medical disorders in North America: celiac disease also known as gluten sensitive enteropathy.

Former “Survivor” contestant and television host, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, is the latest celebrity to shed light on her experience of living the gluten-free life.

Although interviews with celebrities like Hasselbeck are extremely helpful in raising awareness about the disease, “the celebrity halo may cause some people to go on a gluten free diet for the wrong reasons,” says Shelley Case, RD, a celiac researcher, dietitian and author of Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide.

Case recently set the record straight about celiac disease and going gluten-free in the hope of dispelling some of the more common myths about the diet.

Not Everyone Should Be on a Gluten-Free Diet

“It’s a myth that everyone should be on a gluten-free diet,” says Case. “Just because alternative health practitioners, personal trainers and celebrities are jumping on the gluten-free bandwagon, doesn’t mean it is right for everyone.” Case worries that too many people will look to the diet to solve a multitude of problems such as arthritis, ADHD, elevating energy levels and even weight loss. “Contrary to popular buzz, the GF diet is not a panacea diet” says Case.

A strict, life long gluten-free diet (no wheat, rye and barley) is the only effective treatment for celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects 1 in 100 people. And yet only 5-10% percent of the population is accurately diagnosed with the gastrointestinal condition, which can affect everyone, from children to the elderly.

The disease affects people differently. For some, the symptoms may include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, while for others it might be fatigue, bone or joint pain, mouth ulcers, migraines, irritability or depression. In fact, anemia is one of the most common symptoms in adults according to a study co-authored by Case and published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences.

Self-Diagnosis of Celiac Disease Can Be Dangerous

Case refutes the common myth that a trial gluten-free diet is the best way to determine if you have celiac disease. “Unfortunately a growing number of people are attempting to self-diagnose their own gluten sensitivity without proper medical assessment and nutrition counseling,” says Case. “It’s absolutely imperative to see a physician BEFORE adopting a gluten-free diet.”

Celiac disease is diagnosed by a specific blood test and small intestinal biopsy. Gluten must be present in the diet in order for these tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Without an official diagnosis, people may not be motivated to strictly follow the diet for the rest of their lives or receive further follow up care to monitor for potential complications of the disease that can include osteoporosis and gastrointestinal cancer. Furthermore, their relatives may not get screened for celiac disease if the family member does not have a confirmed biopsy proven diagnosis.

Case worries that many people will try this diet as the latest “fad” because of a celebrity status associated with it. As result, “those with celiac disease may not be taken as seriously in restaurants because everyone thinks it’s just a lifestyle choice or trendy obsession.” Even small amounts of gluten can damage the intestinal tract. Because celiac disease is a serious lifelong disorder, it should be accorded the respect it deserves.

May is celiac awareness month in North America. For more information on Shelley Case’s popular Gluten-Free Diet book and other valuable resources for consumers, health professionals, and the media visit http://www.glutenfreediet.ca

About Shelley Case:

Shelley Case, RD is a registered dietitian and a member of the Medical Advisory Boards of the Celiac Disease Foundation and Gluten Intolerance Group in the US and Professional Advisory Board of the Canadian Celiac Association. A leading international nutrition expert on celiac disease, Shelley has been researching gluten-free products for over 25 years. The latest edition of her book Gluten-Free Diet describes more than 3100 gluten-free products from more than 270 companies in the US, Canada and around the world. The book is viewed as the definitive gluten-free guide, and numerous celiac health experts like Dr. Alessio Fasano, MD and Dr. Peter Green, MD recommend all their patients to use this book.
